Why Tahiti?

I seem to associate maverick guys like me with Tahiti, a Polynesian island where Paul Gauguin, the nonconformist and fiercely rebellious artist lived at the fag end of his life. And found ultimate peace in his life. I think Jean Genet should have been sent there also. It is a land for no land's man... er. men.
